The ORCID system for author identifiers launched in mid-October 2012, and there are already 30,000 registrants. ORCID functionality is now live in the ScholarOne Manuscript system (S1M), and Wiley will enable it for our S1M journals in late December 2012
Authors submitting a manuscript via S1M will be asked for their ORCID on submission; if they do not have an ORCID, they will have the opportunity to link to the registration page on the ORCID site. Since ORCID is not yet integrated with our own internal metadata systems, for the time being, this transaction will only involve S1M, the author, and ORCID. We expect full Wiley-ORCID integration to be in place around April 2013. Wiley will then use ORCID to build a set of apps or services for authors and editors.
The same is true for Editorial Manager, and we are still determining how other systems, such as eJournal Press, will be integrated with ORCID.
For journals that do not use any online peer review system, authors can go directly to the ORCID site to register for their ORCID: http://about.orcid.org/
More information on ORCID can be found in the August 2012 issue of Publishing News.
